Proven success
Wolfram “Wolfman” Kurschat:
German National Champion XC 1999, 2007 and 2009

Wolfgang Kurschat is one of the World’s best cross country riders. He is also a complete perfectionist. He knows, that as far as performance is concerned it isn’t just about what you are capable of, but transferring that to the bike. It is a combination of training, analysis of the course, tactics and the bike that are key to his success.

This has enabled Wolfram to ride with the best in the world for 17 years. In 2009 in addition to two second placed finishes at two of the largest World Cup races, he also took the German Champion’s title. A title that he first won 10 years previously. His attention to detail is invaluable to the research and development team at Ergon.

Interview with Wolfram Kurschat

What was the best moment in the 2009 season

The two second placed finishes at the huge World Cup events of Offenburg and Houffalize

What does it mean to you to take the German Championship for the third time?

The first time was special. Today, the focus is different, it is about international results. That said, in Germany we have a very high level and it isn’t easy to win this jersey as it has a lot of prestige attached to it.

How have you managed to stay at the top of the game for so long?

It would be a lie to say it is easy - every year getting the form right to ride and perform internationally. It is what you make it. The trick is not to orientate yourself on those around you, but to concentrate on what you find important and your own strengths.

What meaning does ergonomics have for you?

Ergonomics for me is about an improvement of the connection between man and machine and is very important for me. Every improvement of this interaction makes me faster, and that after all is the building blocks for success.

How important is the grip in this equation?

As the main contact point, they are extremely important. It is a feedback loop, telling me about the terrain, while I steer and guide the bike. For me, the better this contact point, the better my control. Ergon have perfected this.
