The first weekend in March marked the opening round of the Utah Intermountain Cup XC Series. Consisting of 10 xc format races around Utah, the Desert Rampage event brings early season xc racing to the warmer climates for a majority of the racers who live in the colder climates of the mountain west.
Jeff Kerkove of Topeak-Ergon USA used the weekend to begin his 2013 racing season by arriving early to St. George, UT to log some miles in the warm sunshine and technical terrain of the SW Utah desert. Race day would have roughly 20 pro mountain bike men toe the start line to test the early season fitness on the 28-mile course.
“XC racing is not my strongest format, so using the race in the middle of a 4-day training block was a good fitness boost for the early season” said Jeff following the event.
Jeff rode in the top-10 all race and eventually moved up the longer the race went on. Jeff upon finishing, “I went as hard as I could for 28 miles. For early March and coming from ski and trainer fitness I am more than happy with the result. Such great racing here in Utah!”
Jeff would ride consistent laps to finish 7th overall on the day. Next up for Jeff and other select members of Team Topeak-Ergon USA is the Sea Otter Classic in California and the Whiskey 50 Off-Road in Prescott, AZ
